Flying to and From The Ukraine:

The main destination for international flights is the capital Kiev, which is served by Boryspil International Airport (KBP). However there are other smaller international airports located throughout Ukraine. The three main airports in Ukraine that handle international flights are:
  • Boryspil International Airport (Kiev - KBP) - Is located 29km east of Kiev and is the largest airport in Ukraine which receives most international flights. If you fly to Ukraine this is most probably the airport you will arrive at. In fact it is one of the largest airports in Eastern Europe and handles over eight million passengers each year. The airport has three terminals (A, B and C), terminal B is for international flights while A is for domestic flights. The international terminal has recently been expanded and there are plans to expand it further. However the airport is often stretched to capacity and so there may be queues. Unfortunaetly the airport's facilities are somewhat overstretched as well, so the condition of the airport in general is often described as poor, however it is being continually improved so the situation should get better. The airport is serviced by a large number of airlines most noticeably British Airways, Lufthansa and LOT to mention a few. There is a metro station near the airport, in addition to the normal bus, taxi and car hire services. There are also hotels close to the airport.
  • Dnepropetrovsk Airport (DNK) is a small international airport located 15 kilometers southeast from the city center of Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. It is mainly served by foreign airlines such as Aeroflot, Austrian airlines, El Al, etc. The airport is basic but is located within the there is a regular bus service and taxi rank. There are only a small number of flights each day from the airport.
  • Kharkiv / Kharkov (Osnova International Airport - HRK) is another small airport located 4 km north of the city of Kharkiv. It can best be described as rather primitive, few airlines fly to it and it has only recently become an international airport. Flights are mainly to Kiev, Moscow, Vienna and Istanbul with a few other destinations, there are electric trolley buses, buses, minibuses and taxis providing transportation to and from the airport and nearby Kharkiv. There is a hotel and parking at the airport.
  • Odesa / Odessa International Airport (ODS) is located near the city of Odesa which is a major seaport on the black sea and holiday destination popular in Eastern Europe and Russia. The airport is basic but improving rapidly, however service is often slow and problematic, and the facilites primitive. There are often queues for immigration and you must ensure you have all the nessecary paperwork ready to avoid problems, as the officals have only a poor command of English. On average about 2 million passengers pass through each year. Flights are mainly to and from Eastern Europe or Russia with a few other destinations. The airport and runway are currently being extended.
  • Simferopol International Airport (SIP) is located about 15km north west of Simferopol, which is the capital of Crimea (autonomous region of Southern Ukraine). It mainly deals with flights of holidaymakers travelling to the southern shores of Crimea. There are flights from and to Kiev, Frankfurt-on-Maine, Tel-Aviv, Istanbul, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Minsk, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Ufa, Krasnoyarsk, Tashkent, Erevan, Habarovsk, Kazan, Murmansk, Vilnus, Lvov, and other cities. Most of the airlines that fly here are charter or Eastern European Airlines.
Cost
Most flights to Ukraine from the UK are liable to involve at least one connection in europe, most likely in Germany, Holland or Poland. Expect to pay between £300 to £500 for an economy flight to Kiev and more for the regional airports, depending upon your times, route and flexibility. As the Ukraine is a popular holiday destination for Eastern European countries, prices may fluctuate greatly during the holiday seasons depending upon the availability of charter flights.
