Flying to and From Bulgaria:

Bulgaria has four main airports for internation flights, which are listed below. Of these airports generally the flights to Bourgas and Varna serve the Bulgarian Black Sea coast summer resorts while the flights to Sofia and Plovdid serve the winter ski resorts in Bulgaria.

Sofia Airport (also known as Vrazhdebna - SOF) - Is located 10km east of Sofia (Bulgaria's capital) near the village of Vrazhdebna, it is currently the largest airport in Bulgaria handling over 2 million passengers a year and around 38000 flights. It has two terminals, the second terminal having only been opened since 2006. Generally the airport is described as basic but efficent with queues mainly occuring at the security check points, however terminal 2 (the newer one) is considerably better than the older terminal, more efficent, quicker and cleaner. The prices at the airport are marked up considerably, this includes everything from food, gifts to taxis. There are no hotels at the airport but as it is located so close to Sofia this is not an issue. As for transport there are free buses between the two terminals. There are two regular bus routes running from Sofia city center and the airport and some of the hotels operate buses themselves. There is a taxi kiosk at the airport and there are a number of car hire companies with offices at the airport, as well as 24 parking lots. A large number of airlines operate flights to Sofia airport from scheduled flights, charter flights to discount airlines. Such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and others.
Bourgas Airport (BOJ) - Is located 10km north-east of the city of Burgas, on the southern Buglarian black sea coast. It has a single runaway for international flights, and although it is a small airport it is currently recieving a large amount of tourist flights to the black sea resorts. The airport is small but efficent and well organized, and improving year by year, however the increasing passenger numbers may be having an effect on this and there are plans to expand the airport. A mixture of scheduled flights (transaero, El Al etc.) and charter flights (Thomson Fly, XL) fly to Bourgas airport on a regular basis. There are regular bus and taxi services to Burgas and the nearby resorts, and car hire is available.
Varna International Airport (VAR) - Is located in the North East of Bulgaria about 8km from the city center of Varna. It has 5 terminals, 2 and 3 are for departures. 1,4 and 5 are for arrivals, there are shuttle buses to terminal 5 which is only open in the summer. The airport is a mixture of modern and old, but reasonbly efficent though there may be long waits for baggage to be unloaded. Currently Varna is experiencing an increasing number of flights due to increasing tourism. There are no hotels at the airport, but some hotels in Varna offer a shuttle service. There are regular bus services (every 15 mins) to the nearby resorts and city, as well as plenty of taxis. There are a few parking spaces available at the airport as well. The airport is mainly serviced by charter flights e.g. Thomas Cook airlines and others.
Plovdiv (Krumovo) Airport (PDV) - Is located 10 km South-East of Plovdiv on the main Plovdiv - Assenovgrad motorway. It's located close to the Bulgarian ski resorts of Bansko and Pamporovo, as a result it's mainly used in the winter ski-ing season. And it also serves as a substitiute airport for Sofia which is 150km away. There is a railway station just 1km from the airport, along with the normal bus, taxi and parking services. Plovdiv airport mainly deals with charter flights.

Cost
Discount airlines are just starting to (easyjet for instance) offer flights to Bulgaria which is helping to create some cheap flights there (single and return). Though most flights to Bulgaria are charter flights during the summer, so prices vary widely according to the season. Most flights to Bulgaria are from London airports, and you are more likely to get a bargain if you fly from Gatwick airport. Expect to pay between £150 to £300 for a return flight to Bulgaria.
